Welcome! This site was created to make your teaching life more efficient, effective, and ENJOYABLE. My name is Angela Powell, and I teach third grade in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This fall I will begin my 10th year teaching, with the first 5 years in the Washington, D.C. area. I started this website in 2003 to create a place for sharing tools that will help you overcome discipline issues, disorganization, paperwork overload, and the regimented, boring curriculums that drive so many teachers from the classroom each year.
I don’t believe there’s one right way to teach something, especially since there’s no one teaching method or strategy that will reach all students. Only YOU can determine what will work best in your classroom- but you need to be highly knowledgeable about best practices in order to make those decisions. I hope this website will be one of many resources you use to help you find the most effective methods for your teaching context and philosophy.

What's New?
'Ms. Powell's Management Ideas for Teachers' will soon become 'The Cornerstone'! The new website name, format, and content will correlate with the July 2008 release of my book. It's entitled, "The Cornerstone: Classroom Management That Makes Teaching More Effective, Efficient, and Enjoyable".
For updated information on the website and book, please join the NEW Yahoo Group, TheCornerstoneForTeachers! This feature will replace the old mailing lists from mspowell.com, which were filling up too quickly for me to make room for new users. Yahoo Group members can choose to be notified via email whenever there are updates to the website or new information is made available about the book. Members can also post messages to one another and to me, and access many other features related to the site.

Look for Amazon.com product recommendations throughout the site. When you click on any link and purchase materials, a portion of the sale will automatically benefit this site, with no cost to you! Amazon has TONS of great books, games, and software for the classroom (and lots of things for you and your home, too).
ALL PURCHASES BENEFIT MSPOWELL.COM AS LONG AS YOU INITIALLY CONNECT TO AMAZON BY CLICKING ON ANY AMAZON LINK FROM THIS SITE.
That means you can buy CD/DVDs, jewelry, clothes, toys, gifts, home goods, groceries, or anything else Amazon sells (not just the items I recommend) with complete confidentiality (your identity isn't provided to me). When you get to Amazon.com, it automatically registers that you came from here, even though you'll see no reference to my site. You can get free shipping on many orders, so if you're going to buy, why not connect to Amazon through this site and help out a fellow teacher? J

This site is dedicated in loving memory of Chelsea Cromartie
(1995-2004)
Four years after she was a student in my PreK classroom, 8-year-old Chelsea was playing with Barbies on her aunt's liviing room floor in northeast Washington, D.C. when bullets sprayed through the front window. Chelsea’s aunt was hit in the shoulder and recovered, but Chelsea was shot in the head and died a short time later. Under intense pressure from the community, witnesses eventually came forward with enough information for police to arrest three teenage suspects. The gunfire apparently began after an argument over how someone was dressed. Rasheed Hall admitted to firing the shot that mistakenly killed Chelsea and was sentenced to twenty-three years in prison. His younger brother, who brought him the gun, was sentenced to two decades. Sadly, both boys are under the age of 18, contributing to the epidemic of children killing children in the city: Chelsea was the 30th juvenile to be murdered in Washington D.C. in a four month period. This senseless murder will forever be a lesson to the students I teach on the downfalls of pride, materialism, and the consequences of being unable to solve problems without violence.
Click on Chelsea's picture for a slideshow about her story.
