Family Festivities are opportunities for parents to come into the classroom to learn more about what you're teaching in school and how to help their kids at home.  These can be done in the early morning before school (so parents can attend before work) or in the afternoons/evenings.  I began holding bi-monthly Family Fests bi-monthly in the 2006-2007 school year, but I know teachers who hold only one a year or one a quarter.  Start with whatever you are comfortable with and use parental feedback to determine what to do the following school year.  I like to have a variety of festivities, some of which are just opportunities for families to socialize with one another and build a sense of community!  What follows is the schedule from 2005-2006, which was my trial run.  The parents and kids LOVED every single one, and turn-out was pretty good.  After each event, there's evaluation form for parents to fill out to help me plan.  If you like the ideas below and want to use that table format to plan your own activities, you can download a printable version for parents that you can type directly into as you customize it for your families:

Open House

The most important event of the school year- you will get to see our classroom and what we do each day, as well as receive essential information about school and class policies, FCAT, upcoming events, and much more.  PLEASE plan to attend this!

October

Get-To-Know-You Breakfast and Scavenger Hunt

Start your week off with a good breakfast and great company.  Come meet the other children in your child’s class and put faces with all those names you’ve been hearing!  Your child will take you on a scavenger hunt around our classroom to show what we’ve been doing and how our day is organized.  You’ll also get a chance to talk with other parents in a relaxed setting.

November

Thanksgiving Celebration

The children will have pumpkin bread and other fall treats awaiting you as they present the charities and community outreach opportunities they have chosen to get involved with.  You’ll see examples of the many ways we are reaching out to those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

December

Holiday Traditions Tribute

The Home Learning Project for December will involve students sharing their family traditions at the holidays.  Projects will be on display and each child will take 2-3 minutes to describe how his or her family makes the holidays special.  This will be a very unique time of food, songs, art, and much more.

FCAT Jeopardy

What skills does the FCAT test, anyway?  You’ll know for sure after this!  The children will design FCAT-style questions for families to try to answer (this is more challenging than you would think!) and quiz the parents in a game-show style format.  There will be a prize for the family who earns the most points!

February

Valentine’s Math Blast

Come join us for a time to celebrate being with the people you care most about, and learn how to help your child be successful in math.  Families and students will work together through a rotation of hands-on math activities with a Valentines theme.

March

Writer’s Workshop

At this festivity, students will share their writing portfolios and participate in a writing lesson demonstration to show you how writing is taught in third grade.  You will see what the state expectations are in preparation for the writing portion of the FCAT introduced in 4th grade.  A fourth grade teacher will also stop by to answer any questions you might have.

April

Pizza Picnic

April tends to be a fabulous month in South Florida, and we’re going to get outside and enjoy it!  Come enjoy a whole-class family pizza picnic out on the lawn.  Science Fair projects will also be on display for parent viewing.

Parent’s Day Breakfast/

End-Of-Year Celebration

We’ll have a potluck brunch to celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.  This final event of the year will be full of surprises for mom, dad, and the other adults that are special to each child.
